cc eck holds degrees in literature and political thought from universities you’ve heard of, where they were blessed by the opportunity to sit at the feet of several modern-day masters. Thereafter, while toiling in demeaning service jobs for too many years, cc managed to carve out the precious time required to write their debut novel.

cc has no pets and no children, but hopes to be able to afford some happy combination of both in the future.

“As a Black writer, I care about authorial voice, about authenticity. And so I want to know cc’s background. As a queer woman, I also want to know their gender and orientation. That said, as a reader, I have to admit that by page two I was deliciously lost in this rich tapestry of voices, sexes, ethnicities, politics, and history… I loved it. But I still want to know.”

“I read an early draft of cc’s debut novel and I’ll say this much: this book will mess with your head, mess with your heart, make you question who you are and how you’re electing to spend your time. It’s bold, unconventional in structure, and shocking. It’s also beautifully written.”

“I was lucky enough to have taught cc as an undergraduate. I read the first piece of writing they submitted and had to pull them aside and toss them what I call a ‘professorial bouquet’. I wanted them to know in no uncertain terms that they possessed a rare gift; a singular talent that needed to be nurtured. For years, I encouraged them to focus on their craft, to dig deeper, to take bigger risks. I read an early draft of this, their debut novel, and another congratulatory bouquet is in order. Simply put, this is a voice America and the world desperately needs right now.”

“Reading cc’s writing is akin to grabbing the third rail with both hands. You can’t let go, can’t look away, you know the train’s bearing down fast and furious, but somehow you don’t care. Either your heart’s going to explode, or you’ll be flattened, or perhaps, like me, you’ll finish having had a transcendent, almost religious experience. Grab the rail and see for yourself.”
